THE LEGAL PROFESSION OPEN TO THE WORLD
We are quite thrilled to invite all members of the Bar Association to take part in the celebration of our patron Festivity, “Sant Raimon de Penyafort”, for the opportunity afforded to us to recall with pride the prestigious history of our Corporation, founded on the 17th of May 1833 for the purposes of defending the very interests of the legal profession in Barcelona, but above all, to become a battering ram in the fight for the rights and freedoms of all the citizenry.
It is also an excellent occasion to reclaim the unity and commitment of a society that is facing great challenges that demands our institution boost and champion what it should be, the Legal Profession open to the world, assuming the responsibility to ensure that the legislation safeguards the present needs without compromising those of future generations.
The concept of development has gradually evolved over the years, being a demand today that this is sustainable in order to identify it with true progress, in which not only economic prosperity is promoted, but also the wellbeing of people and the protection of the environment.
With this spirit, the Barcelona Bar Association, committed to the Agenda 2030 and aware that its materialisation is everyone’s responsibility, adopted on the 26th of February 2019 the decision to constitute the Delegated Committee to promote the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with 17 goals and 169 targets that represent and are inspired by universal values such as dignity, justice and equal opportunities.
I want to take the opportunity to acknowledge the enormous task undertaken by this Committee, of which I must particularly underline the effort made to make visible the SDG nos. 5 (Gender Equality) and 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), to ensure that technological development makes it possible for the balance to incline towards the side of human rights, placing special emphasis on the transversal dimension of the right to equality and the fight against discrimination in all its forms.
Our institution, aware that climate change is a reality the solution for which demands the firm commitment and without delay of all society, has also made the commitment and decisively for SDG no. 13 (Climate Action), no. 14 (Life Below Water) and no. 15 (Life on Land); and it has done so with very specific actions such as the #NoPlastic and #NewGreenDeal campaign, being the first Professional Association to work in the development and fulfilment of the recent (EU) Directive 2019/904 of the European Parliament and the Council of 5 June 2019 on the reduction of the impact of certain plastic products on the environment.
Such proposals have been taken to be complied with unavoidably along with the “15 proposals for dignified justice”, which demand from the Government the realisation of a State Compact for Justice with the active participation of the Bar Association and which is in accordance with the current challenges, such as those arising from the new digital era in which we are living.
Challenges that will be covered in the different training sessions that we have organised for the celebration of the “Sant Raimon de Penyafort” Festivity, in which we will share our vision of Law about these challenges through the experience of many top-level speakers, with which we can bring us to date on the latest legislative and case law innovations in a great quantity and variety of subjects.
This Festivity is for you, the Bar Association members, who are without doubt its main actors and for whom the different activities are addressed to, such as the prize and diploma-giving sessions, the benefit concert or the gala supper which, among other things, we have prepared from the Bar Association of Barcelona with much affection.
